Map the attraction to the route
You like proofParalegal, claims, investigation, audit, compliance, or accounting may scratch the itch with less debt.
You like argumentLaw, mediation, labor relations, policy advocacy, sales negotiation, or communications may fit, but conflict style matters.
You like justicePublic interest law is one route. Social work, policy, nonprofit management, public administration, and community advocacy may be stronger if you dislike legal procedure.
You like authorityIf the core pull is giving legal advice and owning strategy, the JD may be necessary. If not, compare lower-cost paths first.
The practical test
Before applying to law school, spend one month testing alternatives. Interview a paralegal, compliance analyst, contracts manager, public defender, family lawyer, in-house lawyer, mediator, and policy analyst. For each, ask what they wrote this week, what decision they owned, what conflict they handled, what credential mattered, and what they would avoid if starting again. The pattern will usually be obvious.
